Therapy for Depression and Low Mood
Compassionate, evidence based support when life feels heavy or numb

Depression & Low Mood Therapy
Clinical expertise met with human compassion. A steady hand when life feels heavy.
Depression and low mood can fundamentally alter how you experience the world. For some, it is a sudden wave; for others, it is a persistent, quiet weight that dulls the colour of daily life. You may feel exhausted, empty, or disconnected, even if you logically know you have reasons to be happy.
At Fortitudo Therapy, I understand that depression is not simply “feeling sad.” It is a complex emotional and physical experience that deserves professional, evidence based care. I’m here to help you make sense of what is happening, alleviate the weight you are carrying, and gradually help you reconnect with yourself.
I provide face to face therapy in Dorset and online therapy across the UK.
Recognising the Signs
Depression and low mood does not look the same for everyone. It is not always about crying or staying in bed; often, it is about functioning while feeling numb inside. You might recognise some of these experiences:
- Persistent low mood that doesn't seem to shift, regardless of circumstances.
- Emotional numbness or a sense of detachment from the people you love.
- Anhedonia: A loss of interest or pleasure in hobbies or activities you used to enjoy.
- Physical exhaustion, fatigue, or feeling like your limbs are heavy.
- Changes in routine, such as disrupted sleep patterns or a change in appetite.
- A harsh inner critic that fuels feelings of worthlessness, guilt, or shame.
- The urge to withdraw and isolate yourself from the world.
Please remember: You do not need to wait for things to "fall apart" before seeking support. Many of our clients reach out simply because they feel "stuck" or unlike themselves. The earlier we begin the work, the sooner you can find relief.
Assessment & Evaluation
We begin with a free 20 minute conversation to understand your needs and discuss how I can help. This allows us to get to know you and explore whether our services are the right fit.
Creating a Treatment Plan
Based on your individual needs and goals, we'll collaboratively develop a personalised treatment plan outlining the therapeutic approach and strategies best suited to support you.
Treatment & Follow up
I provide ongoing support through regular sessions, adapting our approach as needed. I also offer follow up sessions to maintain wellbeing and prevent relapse.
How Therapy Can Help
When you’re experiencing depression or persistent low mood, even everyday tasks can feel overwhelming. Therapy provides a supportive space to understand what’s contributing to how you’re feeling and to begin breaking the cycle of negative thoughts, low energy, and withdrawal.
Together, we’ll explore patterns that may be keeping you stuck and develop practical strategies to help lift mood, increase motivation, and rebuild a sense of purpose. This might include gently reintroducing activities, learning ways to respond differently to self critical thoughts, and building small, manageable steps toward change.
Over time, therapy can help you feel more hopeful, more engaged in your life, and better equipped to manage difficult emotions when they arise.

Our Therapeutic Approach
In therapy, I use evidence based approaches that are supported by psychological research and recommended within UK clinical practice. This means the methods I use have been studied and shown to be effective when working with depression and low mood. I draw from these models in a flexible way, adapting them to your individual needs rather than applying a one size fits all approach. Some examples may include:
Focuses on identifying and gently challenging unhelpful thought patterns, while increasing meaningful activity to improve mood and break cycles of withdrawal.
Helps you develop a different relationship with difficult thoughts and feelings, while supporting you to take small, values led steps even when motivation feels low.
Teach skills to notice thoughts and emotions without becoming overwhelmed by them, helping to reduce rumination and build emotional balance over time.
Supportive therapy for depression, low mood and emotional heaviness, available in person or online.

Frequently Asked Questions
It is often difficult to tell where low mood ends and depression begins, but you do not need a formal diagnosis to seek support. If feelings of sadness, emptiness, or disconnection have lasted for weeks or months, or if they are affecting your work, relationships, or day to day functioning, for example, therapy can be beneficial. Many people seek help simply because they feel "stuck" or not quite themselves and want a safe, supportive space to understand what’s going on.
In therapy, you get a safe, supportive space to talk openly about how you’re feeling. A therapist helps you understand the patterns behind your low mood, such as negative thoughts or unhelpful coping habits. Together, you explore practical strategies to manage emotions, challenge unhelpful thinking, and build skills for improving daily life. Over time, therapy can help you feel more in control, lift your mood, and find ways to cope with challenges more effectively.
There is no "one size fits all" timeframe. Some clients find a short-term course of therapy (e.g., 6–12 sessions) sufficient to get back on track, while others prefer longer-term support to navigate deeper or long-standing issues. We will review your progress regularly to ensure our work together remains focused and valuable to you.
Yes. Online therapy can be just as effective as seeing a therapist in person. It gives you the flexibility to work on your mental health from the comfort of your own space, which can be a real relief if getting out of the house feels tiring or your schedule is busy, for instance. Whether online or in-person, therapy is a supportive space where you can talk openly, explore your feelings, and learn practical strategies to cope and grow. The support, guidance, and understanding you experience are the same.
